Dune

Material Investigation No. 11

Material Genesis

Dune Earth emerged through observations of weathered boulder formations, where stone is slowly transformed by erosion, oxidation and geological time. Rather than depicting individual rocks, the material investigates the processes that shape them, revealing how mineral, water and atmosphere continually alter the Earth’s surface.

The work translates these accumulated geological histories into authored porcelain relief.

Material Translation

Rounded mineral forms, softened transitions and layered relief recall boulders worn through centuries of exposure. Warm earth tones are interrupted by subtle oxidised markings, expressing the gradual interaction between stone, water and air.

Rather than repeating pattern, the surface behaves as a geological field where every movement records the passage of time.

Architectural Behaviour

Dune Earth responds gently to changing light. Soft relief creates delicate shadow while oxidised tonal variation introduces quiet depth without visual distraction.

Installed across walls or floors, the material establishes permanence through texture, allowing architecture to feel grounded in geological continuity.

Design Philosophy

Within plonc.’s Intra-Tile Architecture framework, Dune Earth explores the quiet transformation of stone through natural forces.

Rather than reproducing rock, the work translates erosion, oxidation and weathering into inhabitable surface, allowing architecture to express the slow processes that continually reshape the landscape.

Material Character

Dune Earth is grounded, restrained and enduring.

Its softened relief and mineral palette reward careful observation, revealing subtle variations through light, texture and movement. The material communicates permanence through geological authenticity rather than visual effect.

Material Availability

plonc. does not produce materials to saturate the market.

Some works remain intentionally limited, allowing each architectural project to retain a sense of authorship and distinction rather than becoming visually commonplace.

Only a small quantity of Dune Earth remains available.
