Fossilised Leaves

Material Investigation No. 13

Material Genesis

Fossilised Leaves emerged through an investigation into the transformation of organic matter into geological record. Rather than depicting botanical forms, the work explores how living material becomes embedded within the Earth’s memory through compression, sedimentation and time.

The surface translates this process into authored porcelain relief, where each impression recalls the quiet passage from life to fossil.

Material Translation

Leaf structures are pressed into the surface as layered relief rather than decorative pattern. Fine veins, fractures and subtle depressions create a geological field where organic form becomes material record.

Rather than illustrating nature, the work captures the moment where biology and geology converge.

Architectural Behaviour

Fossilised Leaves responds quietly to changing light. Raised veins gather highlights while recessed contours produce gentle shadow, allowing the surface to evolve throughout the day.

Installed across walls or floors, the material rewards proximity, encouraging slow observation rather than immediate visual impact.

Design Philosophy

Within plonc.’s Intra-Tile Architecture framework, Fossilised Leaves explores permanence through transformation.

Rather than preserving the appearance of a leaf, the material records the process through which living matter becomes geological memory. The work invites architecture to carry traces of time rather than decoration.

Material Character

Fossilised Leaves is contemplative and enduring.

Its delicate relief reveals increasing complexity through touch, light and repeated encounter. The material communicates stillness, memory and permanence, allowing architecture to become a quiet archive of natural history.

Material Information

Format: 1200 × 600 × 9 mm

Finish: Matte porcelain with fossil-inspired sculptural relief

Colour register: Soft mineral beige with restrained tonal variation

Applications: Internal wall and floor

Material Availability

Fossilised Leaves represents a completed material investigation.

plonc. does not produce materials to saturate the market. Some works are intentionally brought to completion, preserving the individuality of the architecture in which they exist.

No remaining stock exists, and no further production will be undertaken.

Fossilised Leaves has been realised in only two private homes worldwide, both located in Australia. These installations remain the only examples of this authored surface.

Future investigations may continue the exploration of geological memory, but they will be authored as new works rather than reproductions of Fossilised Leaves.
