Vein Cut

Material Investigation No. 5

Material Genesis

Vein Cut began as an investigation into how stone records time. Rather than studying surface appearance, the work explores geological orientation - the direction in which mineral layers formed over immense periods of compression, deposition and change.

The material is therefore not inspired by marble itself, but by the way geology reveals history when stone is cut through its natural strata.

Material Translation

Linear bands, mineral transitions and tonal shifts are translated into porcelain as continuous geological narratives. Every line suggests accumulated pressure rather than applied decoration.

Instead of repeating pattern, the surface follows the quiet logic of sediment, allowing movement and depth to emerge through orientation rather than ornament.

Architectural Behaviour

Vein Cut naturally guides the eye across a surface, encouraging architecture to feel elongated and composed. Installed vertically, it emphasises height. Installed horizontally, it reinforces continuity and landscape.

Its restrained palette allows surrounding materials to breathe while introducing a subtle geological rhythm into interior space.

Design Philosophy

Within plonc.’s Intra-Tile Architecture framework, Vein Cut rejects the imitation of marble as luxury.

Instead, it asks architecture to engage with the deeper processes that formed stone itself. The work is concerned with geological memory rather than visual resemblance, allowing porcelain to become a medium for reading time instead of reproducing appearance.

Material Character

Vein Cut is disciplined and contemplative.

Its strength lies in continuity rather than contrast, rewarding careful observation through delicate mineral variation and directional flow. The surface establishes calm through order, giving interiors a quiet sense of permanence and geological presence.

Material Information

Format: 1200 × 600 × 9 mm

Finish: Matte porcelain with continuous geological veining

Colour register: Warm mineral beige with layered earth-toned variation

Availability: plonc. does not produce materials to saturate the market. Some works remain intentionally limited, allowing each architectural project to retain a sense of authorship and distinction rather than becoming visually commonplace. Only three pallets of the original Beige production remain. The Earth colour register has now concluded.
