Sono Oro

Material Investigation No. 10

Material Genesis

Sono Oro emerged from observations of Australian eucalypts after bushfire, where charred bark, exposed timber and new growth exist simultaneously. Rather than recording destruction, the material studies endurance - the landscape’s remarkable ability to recover while retaining the memory of fire.

The surface translates this relationship between transformation and resilience into authored porcelain relief.

Material Translation

Deep charcoal fissures move through warm mineral fields like fire tracing its way across the protective skin of a tree. Layers of earth beige, ash grey and black are held together by pronounced relief, recalling fractured bark, exposed timber and weathered grain.

Rather than reproducing nature, the surface captures the geological and biological record left behind by heat.

Architectural Behaviour

Sono Oro responds dramatically to changing light. Deep relief gathers shadow while elevated contours reveal subtle tonal variation, giving the surface continual visual depth.

Within architecture, it introduces weight and permanence, establishing spaces that feel grounded, resilient and materially expressive without relying on ornament.

Design Philosophy

Within plonc.’s Intra-Tile Architecture framework, Sono Oro explores the relationship between destruction and renewal.

Rather than presenting fire as catastrophe, the material recognises it as a natural force that reshapes landscape, revealing new layers, new textures and new beginnings. The surface becomes an architectural record of endurance rather than loss.

Material Character

Sono Oro is bold yet restrained.

Its fractured relief and contrasting mineral palette reward prolonged observation, revealing complexity through light, shadow and texture. The material carries a quiet emotional weight, communicating resilience, permanence and the beauty found in transformation.
